Redacted Social Security Death Index

Description of the Service

This Redacted Social Security Death Index contains 87,733,777 deaths reported to the Social Security Administration from the beginning of the Social Security program up to and including May, 2013.

To prevent criminal misuse, we have redacted the Social Security Death Index by removing the Social Security number field itself.

This index has proven to be a valuable tool for genealogists, biographers and even medical researchers.

The entire database is massive, and is cumbersome to work with in its entirety. We make this data more workable by dividing it up into discrete datasets from which you can choose.

Description of the Data

Each file is compressed in .zip format. After decompressing, each file consists of a comma-separated value (CSV) file, with each record separated by commas, terminated by a carriage return and linefeed.

Each record contains:
  1. Surname of the individual
  2. First name of the individual
  3. Middle Initial*
  4. Date of birth (in YYYY-MM-DD format)†
  5. Date of death (in YYYY-MM-DD format)‡
*Middle initial is only included in later records.
†Date of birth is incomplete, or even missing, in some older records.
‡Date of death is incomplete from most older records, showing only the year and month of death.

It also must be pointed out that a very small amount of the data (<0.001%) shows corruption, mainly in the surname.

Pricing of the Data

The pricing is a flat US$14.99 per dataset.

Delivery of the Data

The data is far too large to email. You will be provided a password-protected web address from which you can download your chosen dataset in a "zip" archive.. The link will be active for fourteen (14) days from the date of purchase.
